♣ Cannonball Jellyfish
Saturday, November 20, 2010 || 9:19 PM  The Cannonball Jellyfish is a species of jellyfish in the family Stomolophidae, the scientific name is Stomolophus Meleagris. It is usually 8-10cm in diameter. Since they have no tentacles. They have oral arms to move freely and capture their prey. They usually have a brown or purple pigment. During the autumn and summer months, they are mainly found in the gulf coasts and southeastern coast of the US. Other places where they inhabit is the Pacific Ocean, mid-Atlantic ocean or New England to Brazil. They have a very beautiful structure. They are very spherical as a bell. They roam around in deep sea and feed from the surface. They tend to get caught in fishermen's nets quite a lot in fact. They usually eat zooplankton. They way they reproduce more of their species is by shooting sperm from their mouths. If another cannonball jellyfish happens to eat the sperm with their mouth then reproduction occurs. Usually a larvae is planted on a solid structure after 3-5 hours. The Cannonball jellyfish may release toxins when disrupted. But they are harmeess to humans. Their toxins are harmful and may drive predators away. All except any type of crab. When the toxins get into the eyes of a human or another marine animal then it may swelling to the eyes. As well as cause an irregular heart rate. Though they rarely sting humans. Cannonball jellyfish are used for food to humans. This Jellyfish is one of our least venomous invertebrate.
